Erdogan: ““You cannot implement provisions dating back 14 or 15 centuries”
During a speech on March 8, marking unbelievers’ holiday, “International Women’s Day”, Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdogan criticized those who adversely speaks about women’s fascination with the Western culture, and noted that the Shariah provisions implemented in 14-15th centuries cannot be implemented today. According to Erdogan, the Shariah provisions change together with change of time and conditions. “Unfortunately, recently, we can see that there are some people speaking out of women and issuing provisions contradicting the religion. It is hard to understand. They have no place in our times. They do not know that Islam needs an update and is accordingly updated. You cannot implement provisions dating back 14 or 15 centuries. Islam changes and adopts to the conditions of different ages. This is the beauty of Islam,” Erdoğan said. The above statement of president Erdogan caused negative reaction. For this reason, speaking at official opening of political academy, Recep Tayyip Erdogan explained his statement regarding “revising Islam with the course of time”. “Canons of Quran do not change. However, interpretations and rules change according to conditions of times. Therefore, change of Islamic laws in course of time cannot be denied. If we will not change interpretation and properly update rules, then we will be fooling ourselves. Muslims must always improve themselves. I believe that we, together with devoted Islam scholars, will get through this problem. I am calling on experts who work in the field of interpreting the Prophet’s sayings and Islamic law to have a more active role. Otherwise, we will all commit a great sin”, Erdogan said. However, the Turkish president did no clarify on which interpretations and rules the Muslim women are estranging from the Shariah life and turning into imitations of Western women, refusing the Shariah clothes and walking on beaches almost undressed, and acting gracelessly in TV serials.
