8th round of Syrian talks within the frames of the Astana process completed.
8th round of Syrian talks completed in Kazakhstan’s capital. Following the Astana process, delegates of guarantor states including Russia, Turkey, and Iran signed two documents – on exchange of captives and humanitarian de-mining of facilities. In his final statement, Kazakhstan’s Foreign Affairs Minister Kayrat Abdrakhmanov again underlined continuation of cooperation between the parties until complete destruction of terrorist (jihadist) groups. In addition, the statements announces the decision of holding the Syrian National Dialogue Congress in Sochi on January 29-20, 2018. A special preparatory meeting of the guarantor states will be held in Sochi on January 19-20 prior to the Congress in Sochi. Kazakhstan’s foreign minister also informed that the next meeting within the Astana process would be held in the second half of February 2018. According to the Syrian opposition, during the negotiations, it met with the Russian delegation, one of the guarantor states that established the safety zone in Idlib. The statements says that Russia promised at this stage to start releasing captives and hostages, hand over bodies of dead and search missing people. Meantime, it is reported that the opposition handed over some documents to the Russian party.
